Rules to Play Baccarat

The rules described here are for the modern game of baccarat as found in all online casinos and nearly all land based casinos. In this version of baccarat, also known as punto banco , the casino always banks the game. Other versions are chemin de fer and baccarat banque where the players may bank the game and some or all third card drawing strategies are optional.

Baccarat can be played with any number of decks, with typically 8 decks being used. Individual cards are valued by face value for card ranks 2 through 9, aces are valued as 1, and 10's and face cards are valued as 0. Suits plays no part in the game of baccarat. The value of a hand is determined by totalling the individual cards together then ignoring all but the last digit. For example a hand consisting of 5 clubs, 7 diamonds and 9 spades is valued as 1 since the card values total 21.

Before the hands are dealt players can bet on "Player", "Banker" and/or "Tie". After bets have been placed 2 cards are dealt to the "Player" and "Banker" hands.

If either the "Dealer" or "Player" hand value equals 8 or 9 the game is ended immediately, hand values are compared and bets settled. Otherwise play continues with each hand deciding whether or not to draw a third card.

The "Player" hand will draw a third card or not using the following table.

The "Dealer" hand will draw a third card depending on the third card drawn by the "Player" using the following table.

The winner is considered the hand with the highest value. If both hands are of equal value the "Tie" bet wins and "Banker" and "Player" bets are a push.

The standard payouts for winning bets are:

"Player":1 to 1
"Banker":0.95 to 1
"Tie":8 to 1
